Laura Coverley, children's stammering therapist

Specialist Stammering Support up to Age 16

Laura Coverley, Talking Toolbox's principal speech and language therapist, has a special interest in supporting children and young people who stammer. Support is tailored to the child's age, communication, confidence and the priorities they and their family identify.

Laura is an accredited Palin Parent-Child Interaction (Palin PCI) therapist and has completed Michael Palin Centre training in supporting 8–14s, integrating stammering management approaches, CBT, solution-focused brief therapy and supporting autistic children who stammer.

Ask about a stammering assessment

What support may include

  • A detailed conversation about the child's stammer and its impact in different situations.
  • Age-appropriate assessment of speech, communication and the child's own perspective.
  • Parent-child interaction support for younger children when Palin PCI is suitable.
  • Individual strategies and therapy goals for school-age children and teenagers.
  • Liaison with school and existing NHS professionals, with consent.

A child-centred approach

Therapy is not based on a single definition of success. We listen to what matters to the child and family, which may include understanding stammering, communicating with less worry, participating more freely or developing practical ways to manage difficult situations.

An initial assessment helps establish whether therapy is appropriate and what form it should take. A detailed written report and recommendations are included.
